Solar Panels for Caravans

Motorhoming and caravanning is about freedom. Taking to the open road and getting away from it all. But it’s not easy getting away from it all when you have to have an electrical hook-up point when you stop.

The sad fact is most motorhomes and caravans have a leisure battery that only gives a finite amount of power. If you want to wash up in hot water, switch on the heater, boil the kettle or watch television for any length of time, an alternate source of electricity will be needed. And for many, the whole idea of using fossil fuels through the national grid or a petrol-powered generator goes against the grain of why they took to the road in a motorhome or caravan in the first place.

Specially designed solar panels for caravans and motorhomes fit the bill perfectly.

Converting the sun’s energy into power using solar panels for caravans and motorhomes could give you all the power you need to live off grid and do away with nightly electrical hook-up charges.

However, the biggest challenge of solar panels for caravans and motorhomes is getting the right power output. Too little and you’ll be half way through evening news and the power goes out. Too much and you’ll have spent a fortune on something you’ll use only a tiny proportion of its capacity.

Eight tips for owning and using solar panels for caravans and motorhomes

  1. The most efficient way of collecting the sun's rays is to have the panel pointing South at a 40 degree angle. It's important to make sure that there are no shadows falling on the panel as even the smallest one can drastically affect the amount of power collected and converted. It's even more important in winter to ensure you gather the maximum light available, but remember – the angle of the sun is different in the winter than the summer.

  2. Don't try to charge your motorhome or caravan solar panel inside. They are designed to be charged outside in direct sunlight, not behind a glass or plastic window, and it could take up to three times longer to provide the same charge as both glass and plastic diffuse the sun's rays.

  3. Check whether you need to clip your solar panel directly to the leisure battery or use a specific adapter for your caravan or motorhome. If you have them fixed, will the attachments to the battery affect any warranty on your caravan or motorhome.

  4. Decide whether you want to have a solar panel that is fixed into place or flexible enough to be moved around. If you are on a site, will you be happy to leave a flexible solar panel outside if you go out for the whole day or is there a chance it could be stolen?

  5. Is your leisure battery up to the task? The amount of power you are able to store will depend on the condition of your battery, so it pays to make sure it is in good condition and able to store the maximum power your motorhome or caravan solar panel. Most people use the majority of their power after dark, which would lead to your battery consistently dropping below 50% charge before being recharged. This will reduce the life expectancy of the battery so it would be worthwhile to get a higher capacity battery.

  6. Will you need an inverter? Solar panels for caravans and motorhomes produce extremely powerful direct current (DC) not alternating current (AC) that you normally have in your home. If you want to plug in three-pin 230V equipment from your home, you will need an inverter to make the conversion or risk blowing up your appliances.

  7. Your will probably need a slightly higher rated solar panel, to take account of any fluctuating weather and lifestyle conditions that could affect it.

  8. Solar panels are very good at keeping your leisure battery in good condition when it is not being used so it doesn't run down and discharge.
